||Dutch ship Mercur (skipper Jan G. Visser), while sailing from Riga to Rotterdam, hit rocks near the coast of Saaremaa during the night of Aug 24th 1830 (Julian calendar), and filled up quickly with water. It was impossible to salvage the ship, only parts of the cargo and rigging were saved. Experts appraised the ship and concluded it to be a wreck. Rigging, two boats and the wreck were sold on an auction. In August the ship had been beached near Koovi village while en route from Amsterdam to St. Petersburg.
