Story of Sinking: The German ship Dankbarkeit (captain Joh. Glup) was on her way from Newcastle to Tallinn. In the evening of 20 May (N.S.) 1871, the ship passed Kõpu and encountered drift ice that did not do any damage to the ship and they reached ice-free waters again. Early morning on 21 May, the ship most probably hit an underwater piece of ice (or a wreck) and immediately obtained a severe leakage. At 4 a.m. the crew was forced to leave the sinking ship. The ship went under in front of the crew who was already sitting in a boat. At 5 p.m. they landed near Thiko (?) in northwest-Hiiumaa.
Description of Location: Between Kõpu and Hanko, 36 nautical miles from Kõpu (Dagerort) NE.
