Story of Sinking: |
Under the command of captain Louis Duval, the French ship L´heureux espoir had set off from Kronstadt at 8 a.m. on 22 August 1826 with a NE breeze. Destination harbours were Le Havre and Rouen. In the evening the sky overclouded, the wind picked up and there were high waves. Soon it was noticed that the ship had filled with 1 feet of water. On 24 August at 7 a.m., there was already 4 feet of water inside the ship. They searched for the first opportunity to land in order to save the people and cargo. At 9 a.m., they stranded at the coast owned by Ülgase manor. 3 small boats came from land and took the men ashore. The captain and mate went to Tallinn to consult regarding the salvage of the cargo. |
